Teenagers and Your Auto Insurance

by Staff Writer on Thursday, July 07, 2005

It’s time for the teenager in the house to get a drivers license and you know what that means – expensive auto insurance premiums. It’s no secret that young drivers are usually hit with high insurance premiums. A person can understand the insurance company’s point of view. Young drivers are more likely to be careless or to have accidents simply because they don’t have the experience to avoid or control a dangerous situation. But the resulting insurance premiums can be the reason some youngsters don’t have the opportunity to get that needed experience. There are some steps you can take to lower insurance premiums for the young drivers in your household.

Have them take drivers’ education or another safe-driving course. Most people would agree that having classes to teach the basics of safety is a good way to get young drivers off to a safe start. These classes typically include some driving experience in the company of an experienced teacher. And many insurance companies offer a discount to the young driver who has successfully completed one or more of these courses.

Submit good grades to your insurance company. If your young driver is a good student who maintains a good grade point average, point that out to your insurance company. Many insurance companies recognize the fact that students who are diligent in their school work are more likely to be careful in their driving habits. Good student discounts are fairly common among the major insurance companies.

Finally, be sure your young driver is going to be behind the wheel of a safe vehicle. While it might be very cool to have a sports car as soon as the driver’s license is official, insurance companies offer much better rates for more subdued models.
